Springtime Driving on Ice: Staying Safe on Minnesota’s Slippery Roads

Minnesota’s spring can be deceptive. Warmer daytime highs and overnight freezes create freeze–thaw cycles that refreeze meltwater into black ice on bridges, shaded curves, and low spots. Brief sunbreaks can lull drivers into a false sense of security, while passing flurries or rain-on-snow events quickly turn into slick patches when temperatures dip. The result is unpredictable traction, especially at dawn and after sunset, when surface temperatures fall faster than the air.

Preparation starts with your vehicle. Ensure tires have adequate tread depth and are properly inflated for colder readings; consider [all-weather or winter-rated tires] through early spring. Tell someone your route and ETA on longer drives. If you slide off the road but are uninjured and safe, remain in the vehicle with seatbelts fastened, turn on hazards, and call for assistance.

Above all, drive defensively and remain weather-aware. Spring storms, melting snowbanks, and overnight refreezing can create sudden ice even on familiar routes. Build extra time into your schedule, adjust to conditions—not the speed limit—and postpone nonessential trips when advisories are issued.
