Peggy's Story – "She's been through enough. Just pay her."
It was a nice warm day in March 2022, 40 degrees, and the snow was melting. I was coming down a hill and saw the other driver. She had her head in her lap, looking at her phone. She ran through the stop sign at a four-way intersection, barreling into my car and causing it to roll twice before spinning to a stop. It was first reported as a hit-and-run accident, but then somebody spotted her car two blocks down the road in a snowbank.
I was trapped in my vehicle because the seatbelt locked me in, and my phone was on the other side of the car. Thankfully, if you’re in an accident, Ford automatically calls 911, or I was going to be at the mercy of someone else calling the police.
Prior to the accident, I had dealt with a series of medical issues. I opted to have a Medtronic spinal cord stimulator installed–a cutting-edge device with wires running up my spine–to help control pain. When I had that installed, I felt a hundred percent better. At the time of the accident, I was worried the wires would get dislodged. I knew something was wrong with the device immediately because every symptom I had before it was installed returned. And from the accident itself, I sustained a herniated disc in my neck.
What I found suspicious was that the teenage girl didn’t call the police. She called her dad. And when medics arrived, her dad refused help for her at the scene of the accident. At that point, I knew we had a problem, and I needed to get an attorney.
I found SiebenCarey through a recommendation from a Facebook group I’m in, and I was lucky enough to get Matt when he took my case. I am so thankful for Matt and his entire staff. I worked heavily with Paige and DeeLon, and those ladies were fantastic. Anytime I had questions, they and Matt had an answer.
On top of all of this, my husband had lost his job and, with it, our health insurance, leaving me with out-of-pocket medical expenses totaling tens of thousands of dollars. We lost probably $25,000-$30,000 in the last year. I wondered how I was going to pay for everything.
Matt didn’t back down. Even when the insurance company tried to minimize what I’d been through, he stood firm. Matt negotiated with the insurance company and my medical providers to make sure the bills wouldn’t crush me. When we finally settled, I couldn’t believe the amount he fought for. He told them, "She’s been through enough—just pay it." And they did. I never in a million years thought I’d be eligible for that kind of reward.
The process isn’t easy. You get frustrated and mad. It’s not an overnight solution; it’s going to take time, but, in the end, it’ll be worth it. A good lawyer makes all the difference.
I hope I never get in another situation like this, but if I did, I would definitely contact Matt again. I even recommended him and SiebenCarey to another mom in the Facebook group. I told her, ‘You would be foolish to go with anyone else.’
