For over a decade, the Minnesota Department of Transportation has promoted the zipper merge as the safest and most efficient way to navigate these work zones.
The concept is simple: use both lanes until the merge point, then take turns like the teeth of a zipper. But despite widespread education campaigns, zipper merge accidents still occur throughout the state.
